What’s the most important thing for you to have in your life? Somebody mentions hard-work, others suggest knowledge, love and luck.
If you arrange the 26 English letters alphabetically（按字母表的顺序）and use numbers to represent each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c… you can change an English word into a number. So hard-work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98, meaning 98 is its mark; knowledge: 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5=96, while love: 12+15+22+5=54, and luck: 12+21+3+11=47, a small mark. None of these words can give us a full mark. What about money or prayer（祈祷）? They can’t, either.
Then what else? Don’t be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude. Yes, attitude is the word. See for yourself: attitude: 1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100，a full mark.
Different attitudes lead to different courses of life. Most times people hope for a better life. It is possible that one will have a change for the better after one has changed one’s attitude.
When you change your manner and became friendly towards others, you’ll meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive attitude towards failure, you’ll find it’s also rewarding though it has caused you losses.
1. How can we solve a problem in our life according to the writer?
A. Change the way how we look at things. B. Have different attitudes.

2. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. None of the words in English can give us a full mark.
B. Failure can also be rewarding.
C. The word “hard-work” has the highest mark.

3. It is possible that you will have a change for the better if you _____________.
A. can work out the mark of every word
B. have hard-work, knowledge, money and luck
C. are friendly to others
D. have a more positive attitude
4. If we use numbers to represent “money” according to the text, what mark can we get?
A. 70 B. 71 C. 72 D. 73
5. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Failures lead to success.
B. People hope for a better life.
C. Your life will be changed if you change your attitude.
D. How important a good attitude is!

My grandfather is an eighty-year-old man. He always complains about how fast things have changed，and he often says that life used to be better.
Families aren’t families the way they used to be. A lot of families have broken down. If husband and wife have problems with their marriage，they no longer stay together. And mothers used to stay at home and take care of their children，but now not anymore. Everyone is working. No one has time to look after children at home.
And the cars! No one walks anymore；everyone drives. We used to walk five miles to school every day，even in winter. But now we don’t. And in school，the children don’t have to think anymore. In math class，for example，we used to add，subtract（减），multiply（乘） and divide（除）in our heads. Kids don’t use their heads anymore；instead，they use calculators（计算器）.
Most families have computers now. In the past，we didn’t have computers. We didn’t even have lights. My mother used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen. But now less and less people eat home-cooked food anymore.
And people don’t talk to each other anymore. They are too busy to talk，too busy to eat，too busy to think...
