Texting while driving is against the law in 47 states. But what about                             texting while walking? A 2018 study reported that more than 2 500 people in the US ended up in hospitals resulting from using a mobile device(设备) while walking.

Hawaii passed a law making it illegal(违法) to text or look down at a mobile device while crossing the street. It is the first state with a law like this. Do people think more places should accept such a law? The LA Times did a survey. Here are some replies they received.

    Rena Jose, 2, New York

Which is more important texting or safety? If you are looking at your phone while walking you might not see a car come or traffic lights turn red. It can be very dangerous. For example in Japan one person fell into a lake and another got her leg stuck in a hole because both had their mind on their phone. We should make texting while crossing the street illegal in more cities.

    Andy Selvam, 55, California

People do many things that cause injury to themselves but are not illegal such as climbing mountains driving cars swimming and so on. People might get hurt from texting and walking if they're not paying attention. But I still think they should have a choice.

    Bob Madigan, 45, Oregon

As humans we can make our own decisions. I’m not saying it's safe but we don't need the government to babysit us. If we want to learn to make smart decisions the government needs to stop telling us what to do. After all this is a free country.

    Andrew Black, 34, Alaska

This law is a good idea—compare this protection with seat belts. If this law is passed all over US people will be worried. But is there really a way to please everyone? This would not be for fun. It would be safe and good for all Americans.

12 According to the passage in _______ it is against the law if people text while crossing the street.

    A. AlaskaB. California            C. Hawaii           D. New York

    13. The LA Times did the survey most probably to _______.

    A. win the hearts of more readers

    B. encourage more states to pass the law

    C. ask readers if they agree with texting while driving

    D. learn about people's opinions on texting while walking

    14. In Rena's reply she showed the danger of texting while walking by _______.

    A. using numbers                            B. giving examples

    C. asking questions                         D. telling stories

    15. Which of the following is Andrew Black's opinion

    A. Texting is more important than safety.

    B. The law would help to keep Americans safe.

    C. It's easy to please everyone when passing a law.

    D. Whether to text or not while walking is people's own choice.

    Tips for avoiding traffic jams:

The radio has more than just music. Check the local news station for the latest traffic report. Or go online and check traffic cameras before you set out. If there is a jam, you'll be prepared and can try another route.

Take the road less traveled. Although highways may be the most direct route, back (偏僻的) roads can be much less crowded, which can save you from the frustration of the stop-and-go traffic.

Rush hour isn't just a lovely nickname. It means the morning and afternoon traffic lasts for several hours, but they're still called "rush hour" for a reason - everyone's on the road and in a hurry to get somewhere. Treat rush hour like bad weather - if you don't have to go anywhere, stay off the roads.

Tips for those unavoidable traffic jams:

Don't break the law. You've gone 30 feet in 30 minutes and all of a sudden you see people using the shoulders(紧急停车道). Don't behave like them. Not only is this illegal, but also there's a good  chance they'll get caught or cause even more problems.

Pay extra attention to zig-zaggers (Z字形行进者). When some people are anxious, they may start changing lanes(车道)every 5 seconds or cut you off, Keep checking your windows and mirrors. for these lane changers.

Look for an escape. If it is possible to exit the road safely, do it. Use a GPS unit, and you can change your route mid-trip if needed.

Be courteous. Good manners could help you avoid a possible accident. Allow people in from a lane that is ending. Speeding up to keep them out increases your chances of an accident.

1To avoid traffic jams,we are advised to do the following EXCEPT_______.

    A. get traffic news before leaving

    B. choose back roads.

    C. avoid rush hours.

    D. change lanes frequently.

2What should we do when there are zig-zaggers?

    A.Keep checking the mirrors

    B. Stop and let them go first

    C. Sound the hom loudly.

    D. Drive quickly to keep them out

3What does the underlined word “courteous”in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Energetic    B. Polite    C. Careful    D. Honest

4In which part of a magazine can this passage be found?

    A.Entertainment   B. Market    C. Life    D. Advertisement

Do you consider failure as an ending? Do you often feel after a failure that you are good for nothing? Then be careful, you are one of them who have bad relationship with failure. And this is the only reason why people often keep themselves away from their success. The power of failure is that it helps us to learn fro our mistakes and missteps and we must consider a failure as an opportunity to grow rather than giving up.

Let's discover the reasons why successful people believe that opportunity lies in every failure.

Disappointment or failure shows that you are trying

The best way to gauge(衡量)your progress at something is to see how many times you failed. In case you haven't failed yet, chances are that you haven't tried hard yet.

Look at all successful men and women throughout our history, they all had one thing in common. That's to say they failed not once but several times before they achieved success. Let's take an example of Thomas Edison: he failed a lot of times to find right filament(灯丝)for his light bulb. Henry Ford had a stronger relationship with failure, which inspired him to quote this unforgettable saying “failure is the opportunity to begin again, more intelligently.”

Achievement lies in looking at failure as an opportunity

Just like every successful person had one thing in common, similarly all unsuccessful persons throughout our history had one thing in common --- their inability to use failure as an opportunity and a tool. If you feel your one failure is your ultimate (终极的)failure, and that feeling of sinking down is known as an ultimate failure, you are pushing yourself away from your expected success. Achievement is all about finding out what mistakes you made, what is the main cause of that failure, and how you are going to make up for it.

Success requires willpower, passion, hard work, intelligence, determination, but all of the above, success requires failure. Use your failure as an opportunity to learn, to become wiser and to reconsider your relationship with failure, the true key to success.

    1. According to the writer, why do people keep themselves away from their success?

    A. Because they don't set long-term goals.

    B. Because they haven't got enough time.

    C. Because they can't deal with failure properly.

    D. Because they are disappointed in themselves.

    2. Why does the writer take the example of Thomas Edison?

    A. To explain the reasons for failure.

    B. To prove the importance of failure.

    C. To take pride in Thomas Edison.

    D. To introduce the process of making a light bulb.

    3. What can you learn from the passage?

    A. Failure can build up your confidence.

    B. Successful people seldom failed.

    C. Failure is more important than success.

    D. Successful people use failure as a tool.

With more and more cars on the road, the traffic jam will happen. How do we see it and how can we solve the problem?

We know that the traffic jam happens in many places, especially in big cities. What are reasons for the problem? On one hand, some people think that they should have a car when they have enough money, and then it's easy to go out and they can feel comfortable. On the other hand, a growing number of people hope to use their cars to show off (炫耀). What's more, years of research has shown that one of other reasons for the traffic jam is the driving habit. For example, many young people enjoy driving very fast, so they can feel excited. At last, most of them hardly care about the speed (速度) rules.

Many governments are working at how to make the traffic better. In my opinion, firstly, the governments should educate those people who have cars or plan to buy cars. The governments must make them know that the traffic jam is very serious, and set up a much more perfect traffic system (体系) to solve the traffic pressure.

(   ) 1. What does the underlined word “jam” mean in Chinese?

    A. 事故              B. 堵塞             C. 规则   D. 房间

(   ) 2. Why is the traffic jam getting more and more serious?

    A. Because there are not enough ways of transportation (交通方式).

    B. Because there are fewer speed rules.

    C. Because there are more and more cars on the roads.

    D. Because many governments are working at how to make the traffic better.

(   ) 3. Which of the following is NOT true?

    A. The reason for the traffic jam is that people have too much work.

    B. The reason for the traffic jam is the driving habit.

    C. The reason for the traffic jam is that some people want to show off.

    D. Some people think that they should have a car when they have enough money, and then it's easy to go out and they can feel comfortable

(   ) 4. What should the governments do to make the traffic better?

    A. They should educate those people who are young.

    B. They should set up a much more perfect traffic system.

    C. They shouldn't allow people to buy so many cars.

    D. They should hardly care about the speed rules.

(   )5. What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. Reasons why people want to buy cars.

Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem. "Every grain on the plate comes from hard work (难知盘中餐, 粒粒皆辛苦) ". But sadly, many of us don't actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don't waste food.

A CCTV program, News One Plus One, reported that food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.

Do we have too much food? No, according to the UN World Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010, especially in developing countries. Six million children die of hunger every year.

Chinese people are well known for being generous (慷慨的) . Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table.

Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired (开除) because she took some leftover (剩余的) food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and agreed that it was not right to waste food.

What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food? Here are some tips:

    1. Do not order (定购) too much in a restaurant. Only order what you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.

Maybe you often have arguments with your parens about clothes , homework, friends and many other things. But what’s going on when your parents fight with each other?         If you don’t love yourself first, how can you confidently give and receive love? Only when we fully realize who we are and accept ourselves, can we understand the love of someone else.
So let’s start with some questions by asking yourself. Who are you deep down inside? What are your goals, strengths, clever ideas, likes and dislikes? What do you need to control your weaknesses and improve your growth?
Self-discovery can be scary, because most people consider themselves to be unimportant. They would rather become dependent (
依靠的) than depend on their own. Is that true in your case?
Loving yourself influences your life. It influences whom you choose to fall in love with and your action in the relationship. If there is no self-esteem (
自尊), there will be no love.
A person with high self-esteem is responsible (
负责的) for himself or herself, no matter how much love and care there is between that person and others. Such a person is not waiting to be saved and will not place unnecessary dependence on others. He or she is confident of his or her own ability, value and mind. He or she remembers that he or she is the prize.
A person with high self-esteem depends on his or her own happiness, rather than looking for someone else to make him or her happy. Happiness is an "inside" job. When you accept this responsibility for yourself, you build self-esteem, and then you receive love.

    1. What is self-discovery according to the passage?
         a. Asking others to answer questions.

    b. Finding out about one’s own likes and dislikes.

    c. Improving one’s own growth.

    d. Finding out one’s own hidden facts.
         A. abc     B. abd     C. acd     D. bcd

    2. Self-discovery can be scary because __________.
           A. it can make one feel less confident

    B. it is difficult to answer these questions

    C. it is bad for one’s growth
           D. it makes one not believe others

    3. Which of the following is TRUE about a person with high self-esteem?

    A. He or she considers others unimportant.

    B. He or she doesn’t care about others.

    C. He or she has good confidence in himself or herself.
           D. He or she depends on others to make decisions.

    4. What does the underlined part most probably mean?
           A. He or she has got a lot of prizes.

    B. He or she is the most important.

    C. He or she is always praised by others.
           D. He or she is always respected by others.

    5. What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Accept Your Weakness

    B. Love Yourself and Build Your Self-Esteem

    C. Love Others More Than Yourself

    D. Life Should Be Happy

Next time you’re unhappy or complaining about your life, don’t turn to a cheerful comedy. You might find a tear-jerking tragedy(催人泪下的悲剧) is just the thing you need to brighten your day.
A team of researchers at Ohio State University, US, has found sad movies can make people happier, Science Daily reported last month.

Many people find tragedies make them realize how good their own lives are, the study showed.
“People seem to use tragedies as a way to reflect on the important relationships in their own lives,” said Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, leader of the study. “Tragic stories often focus on themes of eternal(
永恒的) love, and this leads viewers to think about their loved ones and count their good and helpful things.”
In the study, researchers gathered 361 college students and showed them the 2007 movie, Atonement. The movie is about two lovers who are separated(
分离) and finally die during World War II. Before and after the movie, the students were asked questions measuring(衡量) how happy they were with their lives. Researchers also asked them before, after and three times during the movie to measure various emotions, including sadness.
Researchers found that the sadder students felt while watching the movie, the more likely they were to think about real people they had close relationships with in life. This increased their happiness after watching the movie.
        Knobloch-Westerwick explained that negative(
消极的) moods make people more thoughtful.
        “Positive(
积极的) emotions show that everything is fine, you don’t have to worry, you don’t have to think about problems in your life,” she said. “But negative emotions, like sadness, make you think more critically about your situation. So seeing a tragic movie may make you sad, but that will make you to think more about your own close relationships and appreciate them more.”
The link between watching a tragic story and feeling better has long been recognized. The ancient Greeks even had a word for the feeling of happiness after seeing something sad that led to the modern English word “catharsis (
    宣泄)”.
The study also showed that relationships are a very important source of happiness in our lives, so it is no surprise that thinking about your loved ones makes you happier, researchers said.

    1. Which of the following about the study of Ohio State University is NOT true?

       A. Only sadness is measured in the study.

       B. Students’ emotions are measured by asking questions.

    C. The study shows relationships are a source of happiness.

    D. Those who felt sadder when watching the movie were more likely to be happier after that.

    2. Why are ancient Greeks mentioned in the passage?

    A. To introduce the meaning of the word “Catharsis”.

    B. To explain the importance of knowing how to become happier.

    C. To prove that they were of high intelligence and guessed its meaning.

    D. To tell readers the relationship between tragedies and happiness was found long ago.

    3. From Knobloch-Westerwick’s explanation, we can learn that       .

       A. seeing tragedies makes you more thoughtful

    B. positive emotions make you think more about your relationships

    C. negative emotions show you have no need to think about your situation

    D. after seeing comedies, you will appreciate your close relationships more

    4. Which is the title of the passage?

       A. Watching sad films may start smiles                B. There is eternal love in the world

       C. It’s useless to complain about life               D. Comedies should make way for tragedies
