Internet is educational. Many people think children should be allowed to surf the Internet as they wish. In this way, they can look through different subjects on different kinds of websites according to their own interest. But in my opinion, children should always be watched while surfing the Internet.
Many websites have information and pictures that children should not see. There are many things that children don’t understand. All of these may have some bad influence on children`s development. Also, it is more dangerous to let children use chat rooms by themselves. Many parents tell their children not to talk to strangers on the street, so they should be careful of whom their children talk to on the Internet, too. What’s more, sitting in front of a computer for a long time isn’t good for children’s eyes, so parents should monitor (监视) the time that children spend on the Internet.
In a word, children should be kept away from anything that could be bad for them. I strongly believe that it is necessary for parents to watch their children when they use

Bamboo is one of the nature’s most surprising plants. Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass. Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese scientist recorded one bamboo plant that grew almost 1.5 meters in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe. There are more than 1,000 kinds of bamboo that grow around the world on both mountains and plains. Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeters wide while others may grow to more than 30 centimeters across. This plant also comes in different colors, from yellow to black to green.
Many Asian countries have been using bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for building new buildings. AS a matter of fact, the cable(绳索) that hold up the hanging bridge across the Min River in Sichuan are made of bamboo. The bridge has been in use for more than 1,000 years, and is still holding strong.
In Africa, engineers are teaching poor farmers how to find water using bamboo. These African counties need cheap ways to find water because they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water. Bamboo pipes(管) can help poor farmers bring water to their thirsty fields without spending a lot of money.

Smartphone, poor sight
Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smartphones. Smartphones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?
According to a study, half of British people own smartphones and they spend an average of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increasing in the number of people in the UK who suffer from shortsightedness since smartphones were introduced there in 1997.
Starting at smartphones for long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using smartphones in dark room before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils(瞳孔)become larger, too much light enters your eyes. This can do hard to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma .
While you’re probably not going to stop using your smartphones, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimeters away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters away from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times, it should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.
1.How many hours a day do British people spend on smartphones on average?

3. What problems may using smartphones improperly cause according to Paragraph 3?
4. How far should you hold your phone from your eyes when using it?

One of the greatest inventions in history is the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee.
伯纳斯·李(Berners-Lee)于1955年6月8日出生于伦敦。Both his parents were mathematicians (数学家) and were members of a team which built one of the earliest computers, the Manchester Mark I. With the help of his parents, he did very well at maths.
At Oxford University, he built a computer with an old television. After graduating in physics in 1976, he went to work for a company called Plessey Controls Limited in Poole. This company produced traffic lights. Then, in 1978, he created some software and a computer operating system (
系统) when he was working for another company in Poole. That company was called D.G. Nash
Limited. He suggested the idea of "hypertext"(
超文本) to help scientists share research information. In 1989, Berners-Lee learned how to join hypertext on to the Internet. In 1990, he built the first web browser (浏览器) and editor called the World Wide Web. From then on, Bern
ers-Lee allowed others to use his idea freely.
In 1999, he was called one of the 100 most influential (
有影响的) people of the twentieth century by Time magazine. He has received many prizes including $1.2 million from the President of Finland, Tarja Halonen, on April 15, 2004.
Today he lives in Lexington, Massachusetts with his wife and two children.
