Should Shanghai bid for(申办) the Summer Olympics in 2028? Here are some people’s opinions.
Some people said, “The games will improve Shanghai’s global influence and the city is powerful and must try to become a platform(平台) for major international dialogues. Shanghai has succeeded in holding the World Expo in 2010 and the city can also hold a successful Summer Olympics.”
Others, however, are not sure that it’s a good idea. They think the Olympics would be too expensive and the money could be better spent on other things.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics brought much prestige(声望) to the city and to China, but its cost, over $40 million, was high and the Olympic site(场地) in the center of the city is now largely unused. Could Shanghai learn from Beijing’s experience and do it better?
My answer is yes. As one American said, “A great city has to do great things.” Shanghai is a great city and is not afraid of facing challenges. Holding the 2028 Summer Olympics would prove that.
1. When did Shanghai hold the World Expo?
2. Why don’t some people agree to bid for the 2028 Summer Olympics?
3. How much did the 2008 Beijing Olympics cost?
4. Does the writer agree to Shanghai’s bidding?
5.What’s your opinion about it? Give your reason.
Liu Wei is very famous in China because he can play the piano with his toes(脚趾).
One day when Liu Wei was only 10 years old, he played a game with some friends. He lost both his arms because of electricity(电).
Liu Wei was very sad when both his arms were cut off after the accident. But soon he had to make a choice.
“For people like me, there were only two choices. One was to give up all the dreams, which would cause a quick death. The other was to work hard without arms to live an excellent life.” says Liu Wei.
Liu’s dream was to be a pianist. His excellent life included a show on China’s Got Talent(《中国达人秀》) and a wonderful performance (演奏) playing the beautiful Marriage D’amour with his two feet on the piano.

CCTV reported that every year Chinese people throw away a lot of food, it can feed 200 million people for a year.
Do we have too much food? Of course not. According to the UN world Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010. Six million children die of hunger every year.
Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, lost her job because she took some leftover(剩余的)food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and criticized(批评)the waste of food.
What should we do in our daily life to waste less food? Here are some tips:
1. Don’t order too much food in a restaurant. Only order as much as you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you order, take the rest of it home.
2. Don’t be too picky(挑剔的) about food. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it.
3. Don’t keep too much food at home, especially for vegetables and fruit.
“Every grain on the plate comes from hard work”(谁知盘中餐，粒粒皆辛苦) It tells us everybody must save food.

Once upon a time, there was a happy monkey in the forest, eating delicious fruit when hungry and resting when tired.
One day he got up very early and came to a house, where he saw a bunch of the most beautiful bananas he had ever seen. He took one in each hand and ran back into the forest. He sniffed the bananas but smelled nothing. He tried to eat them but hurt his teeth. The bananas were made of wood, but they were beautiful. When he saw other monkeys, he held on them even tighter (牢牢地). The little monkey took great pride in his bananas. He loved them so much that he didn’t even notice his hunger (饥饿) at first. A fruit tree reminded (提醒) him about but he didn’t want to put down the wooden apples. In fact, he couldn’t relax, either. He couldn’t climb trees to get fruit with his hands full, so a proud but less happy monkey kept walking around.
What if he just lets go? Letting go such valuable things seemed crazy, but what else could he do? He was so hungry. Seeing the next fruit tree, he dropped the wooden apples to have breakfast. He became happy again.
Like that little monkey, we sometimes carry things that seem too valuable to let go. If the monkey hadn’t let the wooden bananas go, he might have been found dead of hunger, under a beautiful fruit tree, with his wooden bananas in his hands

Many people would like to watch sport matches. First, you need to know about audience manners.
Most sporting arenas(竞技场)have rules for audience written on the back of the tickets. Read your ticket carefully before you arrive. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event and don’t leave when a game is in progress. When you have, remember to take away your soft drink bottles and other rubbish.
During exciting games, try to control yourself. Don’t criticize(批评) the performance of players and coaches. Be careful with your words, since some may cause anger among other people in the audience.
Clapping is a special form of body language you can use to communicate with players, but you should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them, but don’t go on for too long. After an excellent performance, clap warmly. If someone fails, your clapping will help encourage them.
Clapping is not welcome, however, while players need to keep their attention. Various sports have various rules for the audience.
Enjoying artistic gymnastics (体操)silence. But lots of cheering can really help basketball and football players. When you watch snooker and table tennis matches, flash photography is not allowed. Mobile phones are not allowed in shooting centers.
To be a good audience, you should take time to learn the game—particular rules and related culture of each event.

I told my friend Tom that I often rode the bike to go to the town center but unluckily there was a hill on the way. But he said that I should be glad of the exercise that the hill gave.
My attitude(态度) to the hill changed after I heard what Tom said. This hill will make me exercise to keep fit. It will help me lose weight. It will mean that I may live longer. This hill is my friend. Many people pay money to exercise but I can do the same exercise for free. I smile as I reach the top of the hill.
We should face the problems and find out the ways to solve(解决) them. In some way, our attitude towards problems decides our success(成功) in life. We will all face problems. We cannot choose(选择) to live a life without any problems, but we can choose how to solve problems.
How can you change your attitude towards the problems that you face? Try these tips: face the problem. Write down the bright side of it. Think about how you will feel when you solve the problem. Make a good plan about how to solve it. Smile and do it at once.

Where does your food come from? How is it made? These days, many people worry about food safety. But food safety is not a new worry. In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote the Jungle. The book is the story of a poor family in Chicago. It is also about the dangerous ways that food was prepared. People were so worried that the U. S. started testing food.
These days, most food in the world is safe. Laws control where food comes from. They also control how food is managed and prepared. Laws are important. (3) But it’s more important to make sure the rules are followed. A good food safety system ( 系统 ) keeps people safe. It also helps them eat healthy food. Labels ( 标签 ) on food give people important information. (4) Then they can make good choices about their food.
Although food safety systems usually work, there can be problems. Sometimes mistakes are made. For example, a truck might carry eggs and then ice cream. The ice cream could make people sick when the truck isn’t cleaned before carrying it. Other problems are not mistakes. Sometimes companies break rules to make more money. When this happens, people don’t know if their food is safe.
As we all know, food is closely related to our daily life. We should take actions to make food safer!
1. Why did the U. S. started testing food?
2. When could ice cream make people sick in the example?

4 There was once a lonely girl who longed so much for love. One day while she was walking in the woods she found two starving songbirds. She took them home and put them in a small cage. She cared them with love and the birds grew strong. Every morning they greeted her with a wonderful song. The girl felt great love for the birds.
One day the girl left the door to the cage open. The larger and stronger of the two birds flew from the cage. The girl was so frightened that he would fly away. As he flew close, she grasped him wildly. Her heart felt glad at her success in capturing him. Suddenly she felt the bird go limp. She opened her hand and stared in horror at the dead bird. Her desperate love had killed him.
She noticed the other bird moving back and forth on the edge of the cage. She could feel his great need for freedom. He needed to soar into the clear, blue sky. She lifted him from the cage and tossed him softly into the air. The bird circled once, twice, three times.
The girl watched delightedly at the bird's enjoyment. Her heart was no longer concerned with her loss. She wanted the bird to be happy. Suddenly the bird flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder. It sang the sweetest melody that she had ever heard.

The boy saw lots of dog sculptures（雕塑品）on the table. "Do you collect dogs?" the boy asked. "Yes, they are all my family." Hearing this, the boy understood and felt sorry for him. "I have a magazine here about dogs. It’s perfect for you." The old man was ready to close the door and said, "No, I don’t need any magazines."

What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange and red? You do, you must be a person full of hopeful(充满希望的) happy feelings about life. Do you like gray and blue? Then maybe you are quiet, and you would rather go after than go before. And sometimes you feel unhappy. If you love green, you are strong-minded. 3You wish to do everything well and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists (心理学者) tell us. They tell us that we don’t choose our favorite color as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
A yellow room makes us feel happier and more comfortable（舒适）than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and gladness to the saddest winter day. 4Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have few accidents when their machines are painted (漆) orange rather than black or dark gray. Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or new colorful things. Remember also that you will know your friends better when you find out what colors they like or dislike. And don’t forget that anyone can guess a lot about your character (性格) when you choose something in different colors.
1. If a person like red, what’s the person like?
2. What can you do if you feel low?
(1)About five hundred years ago, an earthquake happened in a small village. Luckily for them, nothing was destroyed (毁坏) and no one was hurt. But a huge stone fell from a nearby mountain and stopped in the middle of the road.
When the earthquake stopped, many people came to the road and saw the stone. Some of the strongest men tried to lift the stone out of the road. But they couldn’t move it. They tried to push it but failed. (2) They tried to pull it with ropes (绳索) but nothing worked.
“Well,” they said sadly, "(3)there' s nothing we can do about it. We' II have to change the way.”
At this time a boy about 12 years old said, "I think I can help you to move the stone away.”
“You?” they shouted. "What are you talking about?" The men all laughed at the boy. The next morning, some people came into the road. One of them shouted, "The stone is gone."(4) 更多的人跑出去看发生了什么事。 It was true. The stone wasn't on the road any longer. It wasn't even near the road.
The boy walked over to where the stone had been and said, "I buried(埋藏) it.”The people looked rather surprised. "You see,' he said, '1 dug a deep hole next to the stone and I dug a small incline (斜坡)up to the stone and the stone rolled(滚) down into the hole itself. Then I covered it with earth.”
The villagers shouted, “Clever boy! Clever boy!”
Dear Lin Tao,
I am writing to you in English. I hope you can understand it.
I love studying in London and I have many new friends. Most of them are my classmates. From Monday to Friday, we have English, math, physics and P. E. in the morning. I like English and physics, because they’re interesting. I don’t like math. It’s too boring. At noon, I have to have lunch at school because my home is far from my school. We usually have two classes in the afternoon—art and politics. We finish our classes at 3:30 p. m. After school, my friends and I always play football on the playground. And then we go home by bus.
On weekends, we have no classes. We often go to the park and sometimes we go to the movies in the evening. We see movies twice a month. I like some famous actors like Jackie Chan.
Oh, I have no time to write more. Please write back soon.
