1.

阅读理解。阅读下列短文,从下面每小题的ABCD四个选项中选出最佳选项。

I often hear a pet owner say, “I wish I knew what he wanted.” Well, the fact is that our pets talk to us all the time. We just need to learn what they are trying to say. Cats don’t make much sound. Their main communication is through body language. Actually, cats use sound mostly to communicate with human beings, and much less with other animals.

We talk to our furry friends all the time, so they have developed a “voice” to express themselves to us. It is important to mention three or four sounds. When a cat wants his owner’s attention(注意)he will politely “meow”. A quick meow is a greeting. The well-know “purr” usually means “I’m happy”. But a cat will also purr when it is in pain. This is the cat’s way to warn others to back off, so it isn’t a good time to come near to the cat.

Most of a cat’s communication is through body language. Ears, the tail, legs, and eyes are all talking, giving us and other members of the animal world clear messages. By watching cats under different conditions, experts(专家) have learnt a lot about cat’s body language. So just as cats watch and try to understand us, we should watch them and learn about them.

(  ) 1.The underlined words “furry friends” refers to_______.

A. cats     B.cat trainers     C. animal experts      D.cat owners

(  ) 2.What sound will a cat make when he feels pain?

A.A quick meow   B. Purrs   C. Hisses   D. Growls

(  ) 3.What may the writer probably write about in the following paragraphs?

C. The lifestyle of cats   D. The way the cats communicate with other animals.

(  ) 4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A .Cats don’t like making any sound.

B. When we hear a quick meow of a cat, we can’t go near to the cat.

C.A cat may growl when he meets a dog.

D. It isn’t necessary for dog owners to learn about the cat’s body language.

Katherine Commale is an 11-year-old girl from Pennsylvania. At the age of five she began raising money to buy nets for children in Africa to help stop the spread of malaria.(痢疾)

When she was five, she learnt about malaria in Arica. She learnt that every 30 seconds a child died from disease. We all know that volunteering your time to help others is good for the word. But it might be good for your body and brain too. Here are some ways that volunteering can benefit(使……受益)the volunteer.

Benefits to your well-being(幸福)

It’s no secret that doing good things can make you feel good about yourself. According to a study by United Health Group,96% of people who volunteered said that it improved their mood(心情), and 78% of volunteers said that it lowered their stress levels.

Doing good allows people to help improve their communities, and gives them a chance to learn new skills and meet new people---all things that can add to a person’s sense of well-being, according to the study.

______

The United Health Group’s study also found that 76% of people who volunteered said it made them feel healthier. And studies have shown that volunteering can be good for your health.

For example, in 2013, Carnegie Mellon University studied a group of adults over 50 and found that if they volunteered for more than 200 hours in a year, they were less likely to develop high blood pressure(高血压) than those who didn’t volunteer at all.
In most cases, the hope of health benefits is likely an added bonus(
福利) rather than the reason behind volunteering. Anyway, giving your time to a reason you care about is a win-win.

A. 76% of volunteers thought volunteering could make them happy.

B. 78% of volunteers said volunteering raised their stress levels.

C. 96% of volunteers said volunteering lowered their blood pressure.

D.76% of volunteers thought volunteering could make them healthier.

(  )2.Which of the following subtitles(副标题) can be put in _____?

A. Ways to volunteer         B. Benefits to your health

C. Benefits to your work      D. Volunteers’ health problems

(  )3.From the last paragraph, we can learn that________

A. if we volunteer, we can help others and make ourselves healthy

B. we should know exactly why we volunteer

C. it’s time to volunteer right now

D. the reason behind volunteering is more important
