Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than “I’m sorry”. This phrase has become such a common response(反应) that it has taken on a lot of meanings.

Saying “Sorry” means to apologize(道歉). This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.

But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man bumps (碰撞) into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry, because it was he who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.

It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy conflict(冲突).So to quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.

Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter: “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, sorry doesn’t always mean exactly what you think.

38According to the passage, “saying sorry” is a cultural expression in       .

Athe USA                Bthe UK                   Cthe WWF               Dthe UN

39What does the underlined phrase “take on” mean in Paragraph 1?

A从事                      B雇佣                      C呈现                      D拿起

40The example in the third paragraph is used to       .

Adescribe a situation that people should avoid

Bdescribe how “sorry” has another meaning in Britain

Cexplain why people should say sorry to each other

Dshow how polite British people are

41The restaurant example shows that “sorry” can be used to       .

Aapologize                                                  Bcalm a situation down

Cexplain what you’re thinking about              Dask a waiter to bring something

42What might be a good title for this passage?

A“I’m Sorry” Is More Than just an Apology   BTraditional British Manners

CHow to Best Catch Others’ Attention            DFinding a Way out of a Difficult Situation

When you are learning English, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. When you read, you can not only learn some new words, but also you can learn how to use these English words. When you read, it gives you a good example for writing.

Good reading tips.

Try to read at the right level(水平). Read something that you can (more or less) understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary, it is not interesting.

Try to increase the number of your new words. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. But you dont have to write them while you read. Instead, try to guess their meaning as you read: mark them with a pen. Then come back when you have finished reading to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.

Try to read regularly. For example, read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix(固定)a time to read and keep to it. You could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up or at lunchtime.

Read what interests you. Choose a book or a magazine about a subject that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. So, choose an interesting book. You can also read newspapers. There are many English newspapers in China. For example, 21st Century Teens . It is easy enough for you to understand it . There is something interesting in it.

It seems more and more Americans want schools to teach foreign languages to children younger than five years old.The most popular way to teach these young children another language is called immersion(沉浸式语言教学法).

Children in immersion programs hear only the new language in the classroom. The children play games, sing songs and talk to one another in the new language. Some experts(专家)say immersion programs are the most effective(有效的)way for young children to learn a language.
