Could your best friend make you fat?

Researchers who have studied“networks”of obesity(肥胖) think sothey found that if someone's friend becomes obese, that person's chances of becoming obese increase by more than half.

Brothers or sisters and a husband or a wife also have an influence, although reduced_people whose brothers or sisters became obese were 40 percent more likely to grow obese, while people whose husband or wife became obese were 37 percent more likely to.

This is the first study to show how obesity spreads through the social network from person to person,”James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, who worked on the study, told in a telephone interviewing.

The researchers said their findings show that obesity is contagious—not like a virus which is contagious, but in a social sense.

It may help explain why obesity is worsening across the United States, with twothirds of Americans overweight and almost a third technically obese.

It has become very popular to speak of the obesity epidemic. We began to wonder if it is truly an epidemic,”Dr.Nicholas Christakis, a professor of medical sociology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, told the briefing.

We think that these findings reinforce(加强) the idea that obesity is not just an individual problem but a collective problem,”Christakis said.

People look around them and see people gaining weight and it might change their attitude about what constitutes an acceptable body size,”he added.“You might say it's OK to be heavier.”

1The underlined phrase“reduced people”refers to______.

Athe influence of people is smaller and smaller

Bfat persons are having less and less friends

Cthe number of fat persons is decreasing largely

Dpersons are becoming thinner and thinner

2What's the new finding of researchers in the passage?

AObesity is popular with Americans.

BObesity spreads from person to person.

CObesity can be spread like a virus.

DObesity is becoming an epidemic.

3In what aspect do your fat friends have an impact on you?

AThey may influence you how to choose a lover.

BThey may assist you in forming a life value.

CThey may change your attitudes towards obesity.

DThey may help you understand what obesity is.

4From the passagewe can infer that________.

Ait's better not to make friends with fat persons

Letter A

Dear Rose,

I like your programmes very much. Im now writing to ask you something about American social customs (社交习惯). My American friends want me to join them in their dinner party. I am very happy and have decided to go, but Im a little worried about it, too. The social customs in my country are very different from here, so I’m afraid of making mistakes.

Should I bring a present, such as sweets or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I know which fork (叉子) or knife to use? How can I let the family know that Im thankful for their kindness?

                        Wang Lin

Letter B

Dear Wang Lin,

Its a good idea to bring a small present when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always nice, or you may bring a bottle of wine (葡萄酒) if you know that your friends drink it.

You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don’t get there early. If you’re going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.

Try to be free at the dinner table. If you don’t know about choosing the right fork or knife, just watch the other people, and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, ask the person next to you.

If you like the food, say so. Of course, you’ll thank them for the meal and for their kindness. It’s also a good idea to send a thank-you card the day after.

                         Rose

B

Good morning. I’m Chen Hua. Here’s my culture report for today, Monday:

A new film starts tonight at the student cinema at eight o’clock. The film is Pirates of the Carribean. It’s a fantastic adventure film. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom are the stars. They are both very popular and famous, and they both act well in this film, and make their characters believable.

The story is about an old ship. It sails around the Carribean islands. Depp and Bloom try to find some lost gold. Then they come fare to face with some terrible men, and have to fight them. There's lots of action, and the fighting looks really dangerous. They also saves Keira Knightly. She plays Elisabeth, the daughter of a rich man. The scenes with Knightly and Bloom are beautiful and romantic.

The film isn't true to life, but it' s very exciting, and some of it is very funny. It' s an enjoyable film, although in my opinion there's too much fighting. But except for that, it's an excellent film. U you didn't see it when it first came out, I advise you to go and see it now. I' m sure you' 11 enjoy it. It' s showing all week.
