Nature and culture are often seen as opposite ideas. What belongs to nature cannot be the result of human activities and on the other hand, cultural development is achieved against nature. However, this is not the only opinion on the relationship between nature and culture. Studies in the development of humans suggest that culture, whether taken as an effort against nature or a natural effort, is part of the development of the human species( 物种 ).

Several modern writers saw the process of education as a struggle( 斗争 ) against human nature. We are born with wild natures, such as eating and behaving in a disorganized way or acting selfishly. Education uses culture as a way to get us out of our widest natures; it is thanks to culture that the human species could learn to adapt( 适应 ) , progress and raise itself above and beyond other species.

Over the past century and a half, however, studies in the history of human development have shown that the formation of culture is part of the biological adaptation. Consider, for example, hunting( 打猎 ) . It seems to be an adaptation, which allowed humans to move into new and different areas, opening up the opportunity to change living habits. At the same time, the development of weapons( 武器 ) is related to that adaptation-from rocks and stones to a set of hunting tools, and from hunting tools to rules relating to the proper use of weapons. Hunting also seems to be responsible for a whole set of bodily abilities, such as balancing on one foot. Just think of how this very simple thing is closely related to dance, a key expression of human culture. It is then clear that biological development and cultural development are closely tied.

The transmission of culture seems to be directly related to what’s in our blood.  Just as snails carry their shells, so do we bring along our culture.  However, culture is also passed on among people of the same time or among people belonging to different populations.  We can learn how to make jiaozi even if we were born from Russian parents in Paris just as we can learn how to speak English even if none of our family or friends speak that language.

1 What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A Culture belongs to human nature.

B Nature teaches humans how to adapt.

C Humans are supposed to be well organized.

D Education pushes the human species to progress.

2 Why does the writer talk about hunting in Paragraph 3?

A To suggest some possible ways of changing living habits.

B To stress the importance of tools in humans’ struggle for life.

C To show how culture develops as humans adapt to the environment.

D To explain why there is a need to call for the proper use of weapons.

3 The word “transmission” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.

A system B spread C start D spirit

4 What is the writer’s opinion on the nature-culture relationship?

A Culture and nature are separate yet balanced.

B Culture depends much on nature to progress.

C Nature and culture are different but connected.

D Nature follows the unwritten rules set by culture.

根据 “Several modern writers saw the process of education as a struggle( 斗争 ) against human nature.” “Education uses culture as a way to get us out of our widest natures” 可知,人们把教育的过程看作是一场与人性的斗争,教育把文化作为一种方式,让我们摆脱最广泛的天性。所以本段想说明教育推动人类进步。故选 D

2. 推理判断题。根据 “Consider, for example, hunting( 打猎 ) . It seems to be an adaptation, which allowed humans to move into new and different areas, opening up the opportunity to change living habits.” 可知,打猎似乎是一种适应,使人类能够进入新的和不同的地区,打开改变生活习惯的机会。文章提到打猎是为了展示文化是如何随着人类适应环境而发展的。故选 C

3. 词义猜测题。分析 “The transmission of culture seems to be directly related to what’s in our blood. Just as snails carry their shells, so do we bring along our culture.” 可知,文化的传播似乎与我们血液中的东西直接相关。就像蜗牛带着它们的壳一样,我们也带着我们的文化。所以此处 transmission 的意思是 传播 ,故选 B

4. 观点态度题。根据 “Studies in the development of humans suggest that culture, whether taken as an effort against nature or a natural effort, is part of the development of the human species( 物种 ).” 可知,作者认为文化,无论是作为一种反对自然的努力还是自然的努力,都是人类物种发展的一部分,作者认为自然和文化之间是对立且密切联系的。故选 C

As the global pandemic(流行病) speeds up, many are wondering about the effectiveness of masks and when it’s proper to wear them. Most people from the East believe that wearing a mask is important to control the spread of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP新冠肺炎). But people in the West generally would argue that, unless one is already ill, wearing a mask is unnecessary.

In Eastern countries like China, mask-wearing has a long history in their cultures. In fact, people in the East wear masks not just to protect themselves from illness but also for a variety of other reasons.

In many Asian countries, masks are worn in many situations in daily life, such as doing housework or visiting patients in the hospital. They can give people the comfort of being protected.

In recent years, they are worn simply for beauty. Young people in Japan, for example, wear masks as a fashion statement, expressing their personal style through unique designs and patterns.

In Asia, wearing a face mask is also an expression of group-oriented values(集体主义).

Wearing a mask, one becomes part of a giant group. “People communicated their responsibilities to the social group of which they were members,” wrote Peter Baehr, a research professor in social theory at Lingnan University, Hong Kong.

In Western countries, however, individual values are the most important.

As a citizen, it is one’s duty to prevent the spread of illness in following ways, such as washing one’s hands and limiting one’s contact with others. A face mask is kept only for those showing symptoms(症状) of illness.

Whether from the East or the West, social culture has played an important role in one’s decision about whether or not to wear a mask. That’s because human beings are social creatures who consider much about what other members of society think of us. The most important thing is to respect others’ opinions, no matter how different they are.

56For most people from the East, what is of great importance to control the spread of NCP ?

57What can masks give people in many Asian countries?

58Why do young people in Japan wear masks?

59Who is a face mask kept only for in Western countries?

60If you are a citizen in Western countries, how can you prevent the spread of illness?

As an English, I can speak three languages—English, German and French, so do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren’t.

Some statistics (数据) from the survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more. From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe.

And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That’s why my people don’t think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.

In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only an option at school. In UK schools it is common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don’t students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.

To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.

Changing the British attitude (态度) to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to try!

36Which country does the writer come from?

37Which of the following about the British people is true?

AThey are good language learners.

B62% of them speak two or more languages.

38According to the passage, students in Britain prefer to learn _____.

Ascience or German .                                   Bhistory or German

Cscience or history .                                     DGerman or French

39In Paragraph 4, “an option” means _____.

Sophia is smart, talented and incredibly nice. As a team leader, she wishes Nathan, a member of her history project, did his part as required. But rather than criticize him, Sophia offered polite encouragement trying to push him instead, only to find that Nathan kept falling behind. It ended up that other team members, who had to take on more work, complained about both Sophia and Nathan, while Nathan himself complained that he was not treated fairly.

How did poor Sophia get into this mess? The primary reason was that Sophia failed in a key aspect of leadership- the duty to provide clear feedback( 反馈 )for team members. This isn't simply a duty but a correctness.

Failing to question or criticize Nathan's work, Sophia was in fact unkind. Many people are not a failure, like Nathan in this case; they're just in the wrong place, and still left in the dark. What they really need is feedback from their leaders. However, Sophia, in this case, withheld a gift from Nathan.

"You'd better use open, honest, continuous and clear feedback," says Harry Kraemer, a professor of management and strategy at Northwestern University, "to help figure out someone's best fit- in their particular job or in the organization."

This approach also prevents surprises. It's not uncommon to see someone suddenly removed from a team. They may have deserved it, but with a kind leader, they wouldn't have been caught off-guard because they would have been receiving open, honest, continuous and clear judgment of their performance.

Then why is it so hard for leaders to give good feedback? "We like to be liked," Kraemer says. So we avoid anything that may cause unpleasantness, but that kind of feedback usually helps members find the right place for them. "If you like to be liked, the chance of being respected is extremely low. However, if you start off focusing on being respected, you have a chance of being liked." Kraemer adds. The most difficult part for the leader, of course, involves criticizing someone. That is what a nice leader finds hard.

Back to Sophia's case. Not telling Nathan how he was on the team only made a hard situation worse. But with a different mindset, she could have set herself and Nathan up for success.

1 The expression "caught off-guard" in Paragraph 5 probably means"________"

A kicked out carelessly B treated unexpectedly

C sent out unfairly D guided effortlessly

2 The writer probably agrees that________.

A being nice to team members is likely to win leaders great respect

B criticizing team members results in serious complaints to the leader

C open and honest communication is a must for leaders and team members

D praise and encouragement from leaders bring out better team performance

3 According to the writer, what Sophia should do is________.

A patiently encouraging Nathan to try his best

B gradually having Nathan dropped out of the project

C politely showing Nathan the improvement he made

D clearly telling Nathan her judgment of his performance

4 Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A To be nice or to be kind? B To be liked or to be criticized?

C Is it necessary for leaders to be pleasing? D Is it helpful for leaders to be demanding?

It Is Never Too Early to Think—and Communicate—like a Scientist

Who is a scientist and what is his job? A chemist doing experiments? A geologist out studying rocks? When most people think about science, they imagine characters making discoveries or finding cures (治疗方法) for new diseases. However, these leave out an extremely important part of the scientific process: communicating—sharing the results of that work.

Imagine if someone discovered something important about a disease. Other scientists need to understand the work well enough to use these new developments to make even more discoveries in the future. The public, too, needs to understand how these discoveries might influence their lives. But none of this will be possible if the work is not shared. Being a scientist goes far beyond the moment of discovery.

Without clear communication, scientists would not be able to use the work that has already been done. So how do scientists tell others about the work that they have done? How do they make sure that everything that they share is as clear and correct as possible?

Researchers publish their work in scientific journals (期刊) .These journals can be read by other researchers around the world. It is very important for these journals, and for the scientists who read them, to make sure that the research included is as correct as possible. In order to do that, articles given to scientific journals before publication first go through a process called peer review. Other scientists who do research in areas related to the work in an article are asked to read through it. Scientists also provide feedback to the writers. They bring up new questions the writer may not have considered, recognize limitations to the results being described, and also make sure that no mistakes were made during the process.

Frontiers for Young Minds is a scientific journal written for—and reviewed by young people. All of the articles in it are based on works already published in a peer reviewed scientific journal. However, while scientists are good at making sure that articles are understandable for other scientists, there are no better experts to make sure that something can be understood by young people than the young people themselves. By working together with an experts young reviewers read the article to see if any part of the article is hard to understands make it clear why the experiment was done in the way it was done and check whether the figures (数据) clearly explain the point of the article.

Basically, these young reviewers learn to think like scientists. It is never too early to start! Ask questions, learn new things, and don't forget the importance of communicating your findings.

1 What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A What is required to be a good scientist.

B Who should understand a scientist’s job.

C Why sharing the results of scientific work is important.

D How scientists make sure their work is clear and correct.

2 From the passage we can know that________.

A scientists are good at working together with others

B young people usually enjoy reading scientific journals

C in peer review, other scientists bring up questions to readers

D young reviewers help make articles in Frontiers for Young Minds more readable

3 What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?

A To introduce how scientists do their jobs.

B To offer practical advice on how to ask scientific questions.

C To explain the effects of peer review on scientific journals.

D To encourage young people to think and communicate like scientists.
