       How much sleep is enough?

To stay in good health, some expert in the US say, adults should get seven to eight hours of sleep. Teenager need nine to ten hours. And pre-school children need more than 10 hours of sleep a night.

Experts say the quality(质量)of our sleep becomes poor as we grow older. This happens because the brain unit that controls sleep begins to weaken slowly as we age.

Experts say the change starts in our 30s. By the time we reach our 50s, a person may have lost 50 percent of their ability to have a restful sleep.

Signs that show you may not be getting enough sleep.

You have trouble making decisions. Not having enough sleep may make your brain work slower in problem solving.

You have trouble remembering things. Sleep helps prepare the brain for new memories.

Your feeling changes unreasonably. People who dont sleep well may feel unable to control their feelings.

You are having trouble seeing. If there is a shortage of sleep, you may not be able to see thing as clearly as usual.

How to improve your sleep? Here are a few things people can do to get better sleep.

Health experts say that exercise and avoiding work on computers make people go to sleep more easily. A cool room is also a good choice for sleeping well.

1.What can we learn from the passage?

    A. With the help of medicine, we can sleep better.

    B. People begin to have sleep problems in their 40s.

    C. Teenagers usually need more sleep than adults.

    D. Few people have sleep problems in their late years.

Many people want to know how to help kids be fitter. There are some steps only parents can take, but kids can take charge, too. If you, a kid, want to be fit, the following may be useful.

    1. Eat a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables. You may have a favorite food, but the best choice is to eat a variety. In that case, you're more likely to get the nutrients your body needs. Shoot for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a daytwo fruits and three vegetables.

    2. Drink water and milk most often. When you're really thirsty, cold water is the No. 1 thirstquencher (饮料). And there's a reason your school cafeteria offers cartons of milk. Kids need calcium to grow strong bones, and milk is a great source of this mineral. Aim for 3 cups of milk per day, or its equivalent.

    3. Listen to your body. What does it feel like to be full? When eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach feels comfortably full. Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable and, over a period of time, can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

    4. Limit screen time. Screen time is the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games, and using the computer. The longer you spend on these sittingdown activities, the less time available for active stuff, like basketball, and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.

    5. Be active. One job is to figure out which activities you like best. Not everyone loves baseball or soccer. Maybe your passion is kickball, or dancing. Ask your parents to help you do your favorite activities regularly. Find ways to be active every day.

1Eating too much for some time will________.

    A. help you grow much taller

    B. make you feel energetic all the time

    C. make you put on much more weight

    D. make your bones grow strong

2Which of the following is most probably taken charge of only by parents?

    A. Serving a balanced diet.

    B. Limiting screen time.

    C. Keeping an active life.

    D. Eating a variety of foods.

3Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?

    A. If you don't eat a variety of foods, you may lack nutrients.

    B. Water and milk can help kids grow strong bones.

    C. Spending less than 2 hours a day before screen may not be harmful.

    D. All kids don't love baseball or soccer.

4The text is mainly written for________.

    A. parents                                  B. teachers

    C. doctors                                  D. children

We spend about one-third of our lives asleep. This may sound like a lot of timebut it is not wasted. Our bodies need sleep to stay healthy. Not getting enough sleep can make us sick.

    Sleep and our immune(免疫)system

The immune system protects the body from diseases and infections(传染). Not getting enough sleep hurts this protective system.

The Mayo Clinic is a research hospital in the United States. Its website explains that when we sleep our bodies produce proteins(蛋白质) that support sleep and help us fight infections. They add that infection-fighting antibodies(抗体) are reduced during periods when you don’t get enough sleep.

A new study from the University of Washington in the U.S. seems to confirm this. Dr. Nathaniel Watson was the lead writer of the study. Watson says his study shows that the immune system works best when the body gets enough sleep. For the studyWatson and his team studied 11 pairs of twins. This is an important difference from other sleep studies. Other research did not study twins. Researchers found that the twin who slept less had a weaker immune system.

Watson says his study showed for the first time that a long-term lack(缺乏) of sleep shuts down parts of the immune system. He says parts that move white blood cells around the body are influenced. White blood cells fight infections in the body.

Watson’s study provides more evidence(证据) that sleep is important tooverall health. And sleep is especially important to immune health.

The researchers published their findings in the magazine Sleep.

    How much sleep is enough?

To stay in good healthexperts at the Mayo Clinic say that adults should get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Teenagers need 9 to 10 hours. And school-aged children may need more than 10 hours of sleep a night.

Experts say our sleep becomes poor in our 30s. By the time we reach our 50sthe average person has lost 50 percent of their ability to have a restful sleep. These people also have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. From middle age onthey say these problems only get worseand they can influence our health.

Signs you may not be getting enough sleep

You’re always hungry or you’ve gained weight.

    You have trouble making decisions.

    You have trouble remembering things.

    Your skin doesn’t look good.

    You are having trouble seeing.

    1. From the first three paragraphs we know that        .

    A. it is a waste to spend about one-third of our lives asleep

    B. we’ll become seriously ill if we don’t have enough sleep

    C. enough sleep does good to infection-fighting antibodies

    D. immune system is protected when people begin to sleep

    2. From Watson’s studywe know        .

    A. enough sleep helps the immune system work well

    B. the study of twins is a kind of common sleep study

    C. twins need less sleep but have stronger immune system

    D. sleeping for a long time is important to immune health

    3. Which of the following is right according to the passage?

    A. People don’t need 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night in their fifties.

    B. The less you sleep every nightthe more weight you’ll lose.

    C. Teenagers should get more than 10 hours of sleep a night.

    D. If your memory gets worseyou may not get enough sleep.

    4. What will probably be written in the following part?

About ten men in every hundred have the trouble of color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected(感染) in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman.

There are different kinds of color blindness. For example, a man cannot see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades(阴影) of green. Sometimes a person can’t tell the difference between blue and green. Only a few unlucky men may see everything in shades of green—a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a difficult thing to explain. In only one eye there are millions of very small things called “cones(圆锥体)”. These help us to see in the bright light and to tell differences between colors. There are also millions of “rods(柱状体)”, but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shapes but not colors.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes(蚊子) like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue light will. Human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the help of the cones in our eyes, we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the help of the rods we can see shapes at night.

    1. “Color blindness” means “_________” in Chinese.

        A. 盲目    B. 无色        C. 色盲      D.讨厌颜色

    2. Some people say it’s safer to be driven by women because _______.

      A. women drive more carefully                B. women are better at driving than men

        C. women can see things more clearly      D. there are fewer color-blind women

    3. With the help of the “cones”, we can __________.

        A. tell different shapes       B. kill insects

        C. see in the dark           D. tell orange from yellow

    4. ________ show us shape at night.

        A. rods     B. insects       C. cones      D. mosquitoes

    阅读下列短文,并做每篇后面的题目,从各题ABCD中选出能回答所提问题或完成所给句子的最佳答案

“Life is speeding up. Everyone is becoming unwell.” This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unwell person who lived in Rome in AD 53 wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives.

But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this: You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the telephone is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done.

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps that is because they live simpler lives.

One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons, Benjamin, 10, and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phone.

The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a trendy, been-drinking granny, to one who cooked things.

    1. The writer uses the quote(引语) at the beginning of the story to____________.

    A. tell us the truth about life

    C. point out what causes such a thing to happen

    D. point out that you experience some big problems and they may be the same

    A. have stopped our lives

    B. have improved the quality of our lives

    C. may make people feel very happy

    D. may bring some people trouble

    3. The family chose to spend some time in a 1940s house because______________.

    A. they loved to live simple lives

    B. they wanted to know how people lived without modern inventions

    C. they were troubled by modern inventions

    D. living in a different time would be a lot of fun for them

Why do people smoke? One reason is that people become addicted to (……有瘾) cigarettes. The addictive substance in cigarettes is nicotine. When people smoke, the nicotine goes right into the blood stream and makes people relaxed. A smoker's body becomes used to the nicotine and if he stops smoking he feels nervous. Many smokers try to give up smoking, but because of the addiction to nicotine they feel so uncomfortable that they often find it too hard to do so. Another reason is that people only enjoy smoking. While governments and health experts have tried to get people to give up smoking completely, cigarette manufacturers (制造商) have tried to keep selling them by producing cigarettes with less tar. 阅读下列短文,从每小题后所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

I love to run with a partner, but there's nothing, like running alone. It's the “me” time that I badly need.

When you run by yourself, you have time to think. You have enough time alone to work through whatever worries you, and by the time you're home again, you'll feel mentally refreshed (精神振作)

If something is weighing on your mind, I say, think about it as you run. Run until you've successfully dealt with it. Sometimes the best therapy (治疗) comes not on a bed, but in running shoes.

Honestly, it's easier for me to work out rather than improve my diet. I noticed early in my training that as I ran further distances, I cared more about what I ate because they directly affect each other.

You want to run at your best performance level, and it won't take you long to realize which foods help and which ones hurt. Simply by running, your food needs change, and you eat the best foods to give you energy.

A friend recently asked me, Why do you run I said, “In a given day, sometimes I hate the one hour that I spend running. But I love the way that one hour makes me feel for the rest of the day.”

There is a mysterious quality that running adds to your life. I don't know if it's the way it shapes your legs or the knowledge that you've cleared seven miles before most people wake up. I think true_runners_walk_a_little_taller. They hold a confidence that doesn't come from anything else.

1What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraphs 4 and 5?

    A. He/She pays little attention to his/her diet.

    B. People should eat a lot before running.

    C. Diet has little to do with running.

    D. Running makes people eat more healthily.

2By saying “true runners walk a little taller” in the last paragraph, the author means that they ________.

    A. are growing

    B. become healthier

    C. are more confident

    D. learn more from running

3The author wrote the text mainly to tell us ________.

    A. why running keeps you happy and healthy

    B. how to get into a good habit of running

    C. the relationship between diet and running

    D. running is better than any other exercise
