American nutrition expert Professor Barry Popkin says that the number of overweight people in the world is now bigger than the number of people who don’t have enough to eat. A billion people worldwide now weigh too much and the number of obese people is now more than 300 million. “Obese” means at least 15 kilos heavier than you should be. However, there are also 800 million people in the world who don’t have enough to eat.
Professor Popkin said that the number of hungry people is falling slowly but the number of overweight people is rising fast. The main reasons for this are:
● people are doing less hard physical work
● more people worldwide now eat too much fatty food
● too many people are driving cars instead of walking
● people spend too much time in front of a television
The United States has the highest rate of obesity in the developed world and Japan has the lowest. Professor Benjamin Senauer is absolutely certain of the reasons for this.
“Japanese people are fit. They use public transport and walk,” he said. “The average American drives to work and drives to supermarket. When he gets home, he sits on a couch in front of the TV and eats junk food.”
In Britain and many other European countries, there are three times as many obese people as there were 20 years ago. About two thirds of British adults are overweight or obese. “The effects of this are clear,” said London doctor Elena Power. “We have more illnesses related to weight and fewer fit people.
China used to be one of the slimmest nations in the world. However, Professor Wu Yangfeng from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing recently estimated （估计）that 20 percent of the world’s overweight people live in China. The Chinese government is especially worried about the increase in obesity among schoolchildren.
“We have a serious problem,” said Professor Wu. “It requires an improvement from everyone, or it will get worse.

In September 2013, the China National Tourism Administration（国家旅游局）issued a new set of tourist guideline in order to improve tourists' behavior when they travel abroad. Although the 64-page handbook contains suggestions for Chinese tourists when traveling at home, the main purpose is to improve the poor reputation（声誉）of Chinese tourists abroad.
In 2013, more than 83 million Chinese people traveled overseas, up 18 percent from the year 2012, according to the China Tourism Academy. But even as they travel farther, the Chinese tourists continue to take bad habits with them. From damaging ancient Egyptian temples to letting children defecate（排便）in the middle of airports, Chinese tourists have earned a bad fame. Chinese Vice-Premier Wang Yang even stressed the need for Chinese tourists to behave better while traveling overseas so as to protect China's image abroad.
Now with the latest "guidebook", Chinese travelers should have no excuse for rude behavior. According to the guidelines, when using the restroom, Chinese tourists are asked not to forget to flush the toilet after using it.
The guidelines also remind tourists of not fighting with others when they want to take pictures at tourist attractions. When flying, the guidelines advise travelers not to take life vests（救生衣）away from airplanes.
Chinese tourists are also encouraged to be respectful of local customs wherever they travel. In the United Kingdom, for example, it is not polite to ask people "Where are you going?" or
"Have you eaten?", the handbook says.
Nevertheless, with a very short history of traveling overseas, it is not surprising that many
Chinese tourists behave badly on their foreign trips. We should give them time to change.
1. What's the main purpose of the new guideline?
A. To improve the Chinese tourists' behavior abroad.
B. To guide the Chinese tourists how to travel farther.
C. To introduce the famous places of interest all over the world.
D. To give suggestions to Chinese tourists when traveling at home.

A. About 83 million. B. About 18 million.
C. About 98 million. D. About 70 million.
3. Which of the following behavior is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Damaging ancient Egyptian temples.
B. Taking life vests away from airplanes.
C. Fighting with others when taking pictures.
D. Taking photos in areas marked "No photos".
4. What are Chinese tourists encouraged to do?
A. Respect local customs wherever they travel.
B. Try to be polite both at home and abroad.
C. Ask questions when they meet with difficulty.
D. Take the guidebook with them when traveling abroad.

Can’t your newspaper do something about the habit if hitchhiking?
On a recent car trip I counted at least 50 people standing beside the road, asking for rides. Many of them were young girls.
Don’t they understand how dangerous it is to get into a car driven by a stranger? What do they know about the driver’s character or ability to drive? Nothing.
Many of the young hitchhikers probably come from good families. Don’t their parents teach them anything about the world? I always teach my children not to talk to strangers. I never allow them to accept rides from people they didn’t know.
Isn’t there enough crime (犯罪) today without asking for trouble by hitchhiking?

School is a fact of life and getting a good education can help you build the kind of future life you want. So let's talk about school and what to do when you don't like it.
If you don't like school, the first step is to find out why. You might not like school because you don't have enough friends, or maybe you don't get along with your teacher. Sometime it's a big problem with your classes and school-work. You may be getting farther and farther behind, and it may seem like you'II never catch up.

Your mum, dad, teacher or school counselor(顾问) will be able to help you. Another good idea is to write down your feelings about school in a notebook. It's a great way to let out emotions(情绪). Almost every child in cities has the chance to go to school, but not all children in the countries are so lucky.
There is a girl called Xiao Fang. She is eight years old and lives in a small village in Guangxi. When she was young, she wanted to go to school. But she could not, because her family was too poor to afford the school fees for her, so her parents had to keep her at home. Instead of studying, Xiao Fang worked in the fields with her parents every day. Then Hope Project heard about Xiao Fang. It agreed to help Xiao Fang to go to school. Her wish of study came true, and now she is studying in a school.
Unluckily there are many thousands of children who can not go to school. You can join in Hope Project and help these children. You know all the good work needs money. Hope Project needs your help.
If you give Hope Project ￥300 each year, it can pay for one child to go to school for a whole year. With more money, Hope Project can build new schools, buy good desks, chairs, blackboards and books. Let's help the children together and give them a chance to have a good start in life.

Dear Sir or Madam,
Last Thursday, I traveled on the 8:00 a.m. train from Glasgow to London King’s Cross and I was quite angry about the service of your station.
The train didn’t come on time and it was forty minutes late when it left Glasgow. A man at the station said sorry to us, but he didn’t give us any reasons for the delay (误点). We then had further delays on the way and had to wait another thirty minutes. So I missed my plane from London to Frankfurt and had to wait for several hours.
What’s more (更重要的是), the service on the train was quite poor. The trip took more than
five hours. Unluckily, we could buy nothing but some soft drinks on the train. Worst of all,
something was wrong with the air conditioning and it got hotter and hotter in the train. Before we arrived in King’s Cross, the temperature was over 40℃.
Because of your poor service, I think you should pay me compensation (赔偿).
I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours, David Robertson

Young people are often unhappy when they are with their parents . They say that their parents don’t understand them . They often think their parents are too strict with them, and they are never given a free hand.
Parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they seem to forget how they themselves felt when they are young.
For example, young people like to do things without much thinking. It’s one of their ways to show that they grow up and they can do with any difficult things. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead and don’t like their plans to be changed.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry by clothes they want, the music they enjoy and something else. But they don’t mean to cause (引起) any trouble . They just feel that in this way they can be cut off from the old people’s world and they want to make a new culture of their own . And if their parents don’t like their music or clothes or their manner of speech , the young people feel very unhappy .
Sometimes you even don’t want your parents to say “Yes ” to what you do . You want to stay at home alone and do what you like .
If you plan to control (控制) your life , you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you . If your parents see that you have high sense of respon suability (责任感) , they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
( ) 1.Young people often think that their parents are too strict with them .
( ) 2. Parents also thought differently from the older when they were young .
( ) 3. What young people do is to make their parents unhappy.
( ) 4. When children grow up, parents would like them to do everything alone.
( ) 5. Unless you get your parents to understand you, you can control your life.
New rules and behavior standards(行为规范)for middle school students came out in March. Middle School is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won’t only have high marks. They will also be kids who don’t dye(染) their hair. The following are some of the new rules.
Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else’s work on an exam? Don’t do it again! That’s not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don’t tell your parents you have done homework.
Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-loving month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone.
Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basketball team lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself.
Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you’ll discover Earth Ⅱ someday. Don’t look down on new ideas. Everyone’s ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.
Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don’t let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know.
Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren’t for kids, so try to look at Web pages that are good for you. The world is not only hungry, it will also be thirsty for water. About 97% of water on the earth is sea water, or salty(咸的) water. Man can only drink or use the other 3% of the fresh water(淡水) which comes from rivers, lakes and underground.
The sea is very big. Look at the map of the world, there is more sea than land. It covers(覆盖) quarters of the earth, it looks very beautiful when the sun is shinning on it. But it can be terrible when there is a strong wind.
Some parts of the sea are very deep. There is one place near Japan. It's nearly 11 kilometers high. If we put that mountain into the sea at that place, there would be 2 kilometers of water above it!

It's about 80.kilometres long, between 4.8 and 17.7 kilometers wide. The river Jordan runs into the Dead Sea. The sun is not there and the water is salty. Fish can't live in the Dead Sea and plants can't grow near it. People can't swim well in the Dead Sea, but they can't float(漂浮) on the water. The water is very blue and the air is clean. Should we teenagers help our parents do chores? Is it important for us to learn how to do chores? I think so. Most of the teenagers like(象) us students are the only children in each family. So our parents love us very much. They have done everything well for us and don’t want us to do any chores. I think it’s bad for us. The following is a real story. I have a classmate called Li Ting. She is the only children in his family like me. Her parents love her very much that they don’t let her do any chores. Li Ting didn’t know how to cook the meal. She fell down in great trouble(麻烦) and often felt(感到) hungry. Later she even had instant noodles(方便面)only for meals. How funny! Some children wish to be writers some day. They want to write stories or books for people to read. That's good! It’s good to write something for people to read! But they should know that they need to be good readers first before they are really good writers. They should read a lot of books, instead(代替) of watching TV and spending a lot of time playing games when they are free. There is more fun in reading, if you want to look for more books to read.
Before you decide to be a good writer, you'd better say to yourself, "I must read more and more!"

My grandfather is an eighty-year-old man. He changed, and he often says that life used to be better.
Families aren’t families the way they used to be．A lot of families have broke down．If husband and wife have problems with their marriage, they no longer stay together．And mothers used to stay at home and take care of their children，but now everyone’s working．No one has time to look after children at home．
And the cars! No one walks any more：everyone drives．We used to walk five miles to school every day，even in winter．But now they don’t．And in schoo1．the children don’t have to think any more．In math class，for example，we used to add，subtract, multiply and divide in our heads．Kids don’t use their heads any more；instead，they use calculators(计算器)．
Most families have computers now．In the past we didn’t have computers．We didn’t even have lights．My mother used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen．But now nobody eats home．cooked food any more．
And people don’t talk to each other any more．They are too busy to talk，too busy to eat，too, busy to think……
Life used to be simple, but it isn’t any more．
