DIY, which means Do It Yourself, is quite popular in the UK. Lots of stores and supermarkets sell DIY things. TV programmes show people how to DIY.

English people like DIY. There is a saying in UK——“As Englishman’s home is his castle”. A number of people spend their holidays making their homes beautiful “castles”. If there is anything that needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. They share DIY experience with their friends. More and more people have discovered the joy of DIY. Sometimes people also DIY for saving money. With the economic downturn(经济萎缩) at present, many people can not afford a big house. They are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. It is not surprising that DIY is so popular.

DIY can be difficult. There is a big market for DIY furniture which people need to get together themselves with a few basic tools.        American nutrition expert Professor Barry Popkin says that the number of overweight people in the world is now bigger than the number of people who don’t have enough to eat. A billion people worldwide now weigh too much and the number of obese people is now more than 300 million. “Obese” means at least 15 kilos heavier than you should be. However, there are also 800 million people in the world who don’t have enough to eat.

Professor Popkin said that the number of hungry people is falling slowly but the number of overweight people is rising fast. The main reasons for this are:

people are doing less hard physical work

more people worldwide now eat too much fatty food

too many people are driving cars instead of walking

people spend too much time in front of a television

The United States has the highest rate of obesity in the developed world and Japan has the lowest. Professor Benjamin Senauer is absolutely certain of the reasons for this.

“Japanese people are fit. They use public transport and walk,” he said. “The average American drives to work and drives to supermarket. When he gets home, he sits on a couch in front of the TV and eats junk food.”

In Britain and many other European countries, there are three times as many obese people as there were 20 years ago. About two thirds of British adults are overweight or obese. “The effects of this are clear,” said London doctor Elena Power. “We have more illnesses related to weight and fewer fit people.

China used to be one of the slimmest nations in the world. However, Professor Wu Yangfeng from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing recently estimated (估计)that 20 percent of the world’s overweight people live in China. The Chinese government is especially worried about the increase in obesity among schoolchildren.

“We have a serious problem,” said Professor Wu. “It requires an improvement from everyone, or it will get worse.

    1. How many people weigh too much in the world now?

        A. A billion.    B. 20 billion.   C. 300 million.   D. 800 million.

    2. Professor Popkin probably agrees that_______.

    A. walking to work helps people keep fit

    B. watching TV makes people put on weight

    C. eating food without fat helps people keep fit

    D. working in offices makes people put on weight

    3. Which of the following is Not True according to the passage ?

    A. Being overweight can cause more illnesses.

    B. About two thirds of British people are overweight.

    C. More and more schoolchildren are overweight in China.

    D. Most Japanese people are healthier than those in other countries.

    4. What does the writer try to tell us in the passage?

    A. The importance of losing weight.

    B. How people keep fit all over the world.

    C. How many countries have health problem.

    D. The number of overweight people is growing.

In September 2013, the China National Tourism Administration(国家旅游局)issued a new set of tourist guideline in order to improve tourists' behavior when they travel abroad. Although the 64-page handbook contains suggestions for Chinese tourists when traveling at home, the main purpose is to improve the poor reputation(声誉)of Chinese tourists abroad.

In 2013, more than 83 million Chinese people traveled overseas, up 18 percent from the year 2012, according to the China Tourism Academy. But even as they travel farther, the Chinese tourists continue to take bad habits with them. From damaging ancient Egyptian temples to letting children defecate(排便)in the middle of airports, Chinese tourists have earned a bad fame. Chinese Vice-Premier Wang Yang even stressed the need for Chinese tourists to behave better while traveling overseas so as to protect China's image abroad.

Now with the latest "guidebook", Chinese travelers should have no excuse for rude behavior. According to the guidelines, when using the restroom, Chinese tourists are asked not to forget to flush the toilet after using it.

The guidelines also remind tourists of not fighting with others when they want to take pictures at tourist attractions. When flying, the guidelines advise travelers not to take life vests(救生衣)away from airplanes.

Chinese tourists are also encouraged to be respectful of local customs wherever they travel.  In the United Kingdom, for example, it is not polite to ask people "Where are you going?" or

"Have you eaten?", the handbook says.

Nevertheless, with a very short history of traveling overseas, it is not surprising that many

Chinese tourists behave badly on their foreign trips. We should give them time to change.

    1. What's the main purpose of the new guideline?

        A. To improve the Chinese tourists' behavior abroad.

    B. To guide the Chinese tourists how to travel farther.

    C. To introduce the famous places of interest all over the world.

        D. To give suggestions to Chinese tourists when traveling at home.

    2. How many people traveled abroad in 2012?

         A. About 83 million.                    B. About 18 million.

         C. About 98 million.                    D. About 70 million.

    3. Which of the following behavior is NOT mentioned in the passage?

         A. Damaging ancient Egyptian temples.

    B. Taking life vests away from airplanes.

    C. Fighting with others when taking pictures.

     D. Taking photos in areas marked "No photos".

    4. What are Chinese tourists encouraged to do?

         A. Respect local customs wherever they travel.

         B. Try to be polite both at home and abroad.

         C. Ask questions when they meet with difficulty.

         D. Take the guidebook with them when traveling abroad.

    Dear Editor,

Can’t your newspaper do something about the habit if hitchhiking?

On a recent car trip I counted at least 50 people standing beside the road, asking for rides. Many of them were young girls.

Young people are often unhappy when they are with their parents . They say that their parents don’t understand them . They often think their parents are too strict with them, and they are never given a free hand.

Parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they seem to forget how they themselves felt when they are young.

For example, young people like to do things without much thinking. It’s one of their ways to show that they grow up and they can do with any difficult things. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead and don’t like their plans to be changed.

When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.

Young people often make their parents angry by clothes they want, the music they enjoy and something else. But they don’t mean to cause (引起) any trouble . They just feel that in this way they can be  cut off from the old people’s world and they want to make a new culture of their own . And if their parents don’t like their music or clothes or their manner of speech , the young people feel very unhappy .

Sometimes you even don’t want your parents to say “Yes ” to what you do . You want to stay at home alone and do what you like .

If you plan to control (控制) your life , you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you . If your parents see that you have high sense of respon suability (责任感) , they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.

    根据短文内容判断正(T)误(F

(   ) 1.Young people often think that their parents are too strict with them .
