When we first moved here, we didn’t have a garden. Mike and I talked about making a large vegetable garden somewhere in our yard, but we couldn’t agree on where. Before we went ahead and dug up the grass, we spent some time thinking about where it would work best. At last, we chose an old sandbox (沙坑) in our front yard to become our garden.

We dreamed about a lively garden with lots of vegetables. We asked many people what we should do to turn this sandbox into a space, then plants can grow in it. And they gave us lots of ideas. My sister was the most knowledgeable, so we listened mostly to her. At first, Mike made a wood fence (栅栏) and I painted it with the kids. We chose a darker color because it would fit our light grey house.

Next, Mike dug 17 holes. Then we filled them with soil (土壤) . It was still too cold to plant anything, so for days I just stared out the window at these holes. To me, it looked much too untidy. I advised to fill those holes back and dig new ones. This time we ended up with 10. Much better.

Over the next few weeks, I worked on getting everything planted in my garden. I started by planting green onion. But I was too excited and planted it too early. Right away it was clear that it wasn’t going to survive. I had to give it up and try something else. Then my next door neighbor gave me red roses to put in my garden. A few days later we went to a greenhouse and came back not with green onion but peppers, tomatoes and so on. Clearly the vegetable and flower garden was slowly becoming our dream garden. Oh well!

I love the way it turned out. This garden will always remind me of my sister.

That year, I was a Junior 2 student. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost everyone thought I was dead. But they were wrong. However, it was difficult to get back to normal life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and yes, maths.

To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic maths skills. As time passed by, I made progress.

I remember very vividly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging, but she also made it fun.

After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.

As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke (中风).

Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak or know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with—just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was moved out of ICU (重症监护室) and finally out of hospital.

One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”

Mrs. Pillar was one of my Junior 2 teachers, but she taught me so much more about life than only maths.

23Which of the following is NOT right according to the story?

As we walked down the shore, Ben Gunn told his story.“I was alone here for years,” he said. “One day, I found the skeleton(骷髅). I saw it was pointing to a tree. I dug around that tree and found the treasure. I was living in a cave, so I took the treasure to the cave. This morning, when Long John Silver and his men came to look for the treasure, I showed myself to one of them. He thought I was a ghost.” Ben laughed. “He ran off, and this gave me time to get back to the squire(乡绅) and the doctor. They were waiting at the cave.”

“Now I know,” I said to the doctor, “why you gave the map to Silver.”

“It was useless by then,” the doctor said. “There was no buried treasure. Ben Gunn had it. My plan was to get Long John Silver and his men away from the stockade(木寨). We could then get some stores from it.”

When we got back to the cave, the squire was waiting for us.

“Three of the mutineers(反叛者) got away,” the doctor told him. “But if we hurry, we can get to the boat before them. They ran back to the stockade on the other side of the island. We are nearer to the boat than they are.”

I went into the cave. The captain was lying inside it next to the treasure—a pile of gold coins.

“Hello, Jim,” he said. “I am pleased to see you. But I don’t think you or I will be going to see again.”

That night, the captain died. We carried the treasure down to the boat. We lit a fire on the shore and had a fine meal together. We were not afraid of the three mutineers. We had pistols(手枪). They had none. There were more of us than of them.

The next morning, we went in the boat towards the Hispaniola. We didn’t care about the three men. We left them on the island.

I will not tell you about the journey home. Nothing important happened. But as soon as we got to Bristol, Long John Silver ran away. He took some of the gold with him. None of us cared. We were pleased to see the back of him. We each shared the treasure and used it in a different way.

Sir Henry and Captain Good were exhausted and weak from loss of blood.

I, too, was more tired than I could remember ever being. We rested. Therefore, for many days before we even thought about the future. Then, when we were strong enough to travel again, I said to Ignosi, "You promised me diamonds if I helped you to become king.”

“I did,” he said. “I will keep my promise. But, only Gagool knows where to find them, and I must kill her and the other witches.”

“There has been enough killing, ” I said. “Tell the old woman that if she will lead us to the diamonds, you will spare her life.”

Ignosi thought about this for a long time, and then he said, “I will speak to the woman and tell you what she says.”

Ignosi was as good as his words, and he persuaded Gagool to guide us to the diamonds. Three days later, Sir Henry, Captain Good, Foulata--the girl who owed her life to Captain Good and Infadoos were climbing the mountains called the Three Witches. Some warriors carried Gagool. She screamed and cursed continuously, but she knew where the diamonds were. And at last, we came to a deep hole in the ground. It had sloping sides and was not a natural hole. It was the work of miners.

Huge statues guarded the mine. I remembered that King Solomon worshipped some strange gods. “Could these be statues of those gods? ” I asked Sir Henry, who knew much about ancient history.

“It is possible,” he said. “The Phoenicians were great merchants and builders. They built King Solomon’s Temple. Perhaps they dug this mine for him.”

“We want to go into the mine, ” I told Gagool.

“It is the Place of Death,” she said, “but if you want to enter, then I will lead the way.”

41Why were Sir Henry and Captain Good weak?

ABecause they walk for a long time.              BBecause they lost much blood.

CBecause they felt very hungry.                     DBecause they didn’t sleep well.

42What did Ignosi promise me to do?

ATo give me some food.                               BTo be the king .

CTo help me find the diamonds.                     DTo kill Gagool.

43Why did Ignosi say that he wanted to kill Gagool ?

ABecause she had told King Wala to kill him.  BBecause she was a witch.

CBecause she knew where the diamonds were. DBecause she would not help him.

44What did Sir Henry and I think the statues at the mine entrance might represent?

APhoenicians.           BWarriors.                CKing Solomon.       DGods.

45Where did Gagool tell the travelers that the tunnel at the end of the big cave led to?

AThe Palace of Life.                                    BThe Place of Death.

CSolomon’s Great Road.                               DKing Solomon’s Mines.
